What actually changes when an MP4 becomes a MOV
Almost nothing, and that is the whole reason this conversion is fast. MP4 and MOV are containers: index files that record where every frame and audio packet sits, how long it lasts, and which decoder is meant to read it. Neither one is a video format in the sense people usually mean. MP4 was standardised from Apple's QuickTime File Format, so the two share the same internal architecture - the same nested boxes (ftyp, moov, trak, mdat), the same sample tables, the same timescales. Converting between them rewrites the index and leaves the compressed picture completely untouched.
The most visible difference is in the first few bytes. An MP4 declares a brand such as isom, mp42 or avc1; a MOV declares qt . That single label is what a strict application checks before it decides whether to accept your file, which is why a video that plays perfectly in VLC can still be rejected by a workflow that insists on QuickTime.

Is MP4 to MOV lossless?
Yes, when it is a stream copy - and here it nearly always is. The rule is simple: if the codec inside your MP4 is one a QuickTime container may legally hold, it is copied. That covers everything an ordinary phone, camera or download gives you. H.264 stays H.264. HEVC stays HEVC. AAC stays AAC. The tool reads the codec from your file's header, tells you in plain words that it is going to copy the streams, and then does exactly that: the same compressed data, a new index, a new extension.
Two things in an MP4 do not make it across untouched, and the tool names them before you press Convert. AC-3 and E-AC-3 audio, which turns up in films and in some downloaded clips, is not valid in a MOV, so the sound is re-encoded to AAC while the picture is still copied bit-for-bit. AV1 video cannot go into a MOV at all, so an AV1 file is a full re-encode to H.264. Neither is common in the files people bring to this page, but if the readout shows one of them, that is why the job takes minutes rather than seconds.
That is a genuinely different operation from what most converters perform. A server-side converter decodes every frame and encodes it again, which costs a generation of quality and takes minutes on a long clip. A copy costs nothing and takes seconds, whether the file is thirty seconds or ninety minutes. If you want to see the difference for yourself, run the file through the codec checker before and after: the codec, profile, resolution and frame rate come out the other side unchanged.
The one way to lose quality here is to ask for it. The advanced options let you change the video codec, the resolution or the frame rate, and any of those turns the job into a real re-encode. Leave them alone and the conversion is bit-for-bit.
A re-encode is never lossless. If a page anywhere tells you that converting at "high quality" is lossless, it is wrong. Only a stream copy preserves the original bytes, which is why this tool tells you which of the two it is about to do before you press Convert.
Why people end up needing a MOV
Four situations account for most of this page's traffic. The first is QuickTime Player refusing a file outright. The second is an editor - Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Motion, or an older version of something else - that either will not import the clip or imports it strangely. The third is consistency: someone is cutting footage that is already .mov, from a cinema camera or a screen capture, and wants everything in the bin to match. The fourth is a delivery spec, usually from a client or a broadcaster, that says MOV and is not negotiable.
Only the first and last of those are truly container problems, and both are solved by a rewrap in seconds. The middle two deserve a word of caution, because a container swap is often not the fix people have been told it is.
What a container swap cannot fix
If an application rejects your video because of the codec inside it, putting that codec in a different box changes nothing. Three cases come up constantly:
- HEVC on an older machine. H.265 in a .mov is still H.265. If the Mac, PC or editor has no HEVC decode path, it will fail identically. The repair is a real transcode - see HEVC to H.264 - and that one is a genuine re-encode, not a copy.
- Audio the player cannot decode. AC-3 and DTS tracks are common in downloaded files and are a frequent cause of a video that opens with picture and no sound. Re-encoding only the audio to AAC fixes it while the picture is copied untouched.
- Variable frame rate. Phones, game captures and screen recorders write frames at uneven intervals. Editors assume a constant rate, so the audio drifts further out of sync the longer the clip runs. Timestamps have to be rewritten, which a rewrap by definition does not do; the fix is in the VFR to CFR guide.
There is also one thing nothing can fix. A DRM-protected file - a store purchase, a rental - cannot be converted by this tool or any other.
If you are grading, ProRes is the right answer and we do not make it
Worth saying plainly, because the search results for this conversion are full of tools implying otherwise. Editors like MOV partly because MOV is the usual wrapper for ProRes, an intermediate codec that stores each frame independently at a high data rate so that scrubbing, colour work and multiple export passes do not degrade the image. Rewrapping an H.264 MP4 into a MOV does not give you any of that. You get the same long-GOP H.264, in a QuickTime box.
For a rough cut, a client review or a file that has to be .mov to satisfy an upload form, that is exactly what you want and it costs you nothing. For heavy grading of 10-bit footage, transcode to ProRes or DNxHR in a desktop application instead. This converter outputs H.264, H.265, VP8 and MPEG-4 Part 2 only, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.
What gets dropped along the way
Be aware of three losses before you convert something irreplaceable. Subtitle tracks are dropped. Extra audio tracks - commentary, a second language, an alternative mix - are dropped, and only the first video and first audio stream survive. Container-level metadata such as chapter markers and some custom tags may not carry across either. The codec panel counts the subtitle and extra audio tracks in your file before you start, so you know in advance whether any of this applies to you. If it does, keep the original MP4 rather than replacing it.
The honest limits of doing this in a tab
The converter runs FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, in this page, on your own processor. That is what makes the no-upload promise architectural rather than a policy: a file that never leaves your machine cannot be retained, breached or scanned. Convert once to fetch the engine, then switch off your Wi-Fi: the next conversion still completes.
The cost is memory. Files over 2 GB are refused, because a 32-bit WebAssembly heap cannot address them, and past roughly 300 MB you get a warning that the job wants about three times the file size in free RAM. For this particular conversion those limits bite far less than usual, since a stream copy does no decoding and no encoding - the file size matters more than the running time. It is the re-encoding pages, not this one, where a browser tab struggles.
Where the tab genuinely runs out of road is multi-gigabyte source footage, or long 4K clips that need a real transcode. Those belong on a desktop encoder, or in the iPhone app, which uses the phone's hardware encoder and has no size ceiling. If you are heading the other way - a MOV from an iPhone that Windows or Android will not play - the MOV to MP4 converter is the same engine pointed in the opposite direction, and it is a stream copy just as often.

Does converting MP4 to MOV lose quality?
No, as long as the streams are copied rather than re-encoded, which is what happens with the H.264, HEVC, MPEG-4 Part 2, AAC and MP3 that ordinary files hold. MP4 and MOV can carry exactly the same data, so the compressed bytes are simply rewritten into a QuickTime index and the picture and sound in the MOV are identical to the source. Two things are not shared: AC-3 audio is re-encoded to AAC while the picture is still copied, and AV1 video, which a MOV cannot hold, means a full re-encode.
Will converting to MOV improve my video?
No. MOV is a container, not a quality setting, and no conversion can add detail that was thrown away when the file was first encoded. A rewrap keeps what you have; a re-encode can only lose a little. If someone told you MOV looks better, they were thinking of ProRes, which is a codec and is not what a normal MP4 becomes.
Why won't QuickTime Player open my MP4?
Usually the codec inside, not the container. QuickTime has no decoder for AC-3 or DTS audio, older macOS versions cannot handle HEVC, and MPEG-4 Part 2 video from an old camera or a downloaded file often fails too. Check the codec readout first: if the audio is AC-3, a rewrap alone will not fix it and the audio needs re-encoding to AAC.
Can I just rename the file from .mp4 to .mov?
Sometimes it appears to work and it is still the wrong thing to do. The two containers use different brand identifiers and different conventions for some track types, so a renamed file can open in one app and be refused, or lose its audio, in the next. A rewrap takes the same few seconds and produces a genuinely valid MOV.
Does Final Cut Pro actually need MOV files?
Not usually. Final Cut and iMovie both import H.264 MP4 happily, so if a clip is being refused the cause is generally something else: HEVC on an older machine, an audio track the app cannot decode, or variable frame rate from a screen recorder or phone. A container swap fixes the first kind of refusal, not the others.
Can you output ProRes for colour grading?
No, and you should be wary of any browser tool that claims to. ProRes is a heavy intermediate codec designed for editing, and this converter outputs H.264, H.265, VP8 and MPEG-4 Part 2 and their usual audio partners only. If you are grading seriously, transcode to ProRes or DNxHR in a desktop application instead.
How large a file can I convert in the browser?
Files over 2 GB are refused outright, because the 32-bit WebAssembly heap cannot address them, and past roughly 300 MB the page warns you that a conversion wants about three times the file size in free memory. A rewrap is far lighter than a re-encode, so large MP4 to MOV jobs are the best case here rather than the worst.
